Catholic Teachers And Distance Learning

How much the world has changed in a few short days.

The challenges of the corona virus have meant that so many of us as Catholic teachers and educators have suddenly had to come to grips with remote learning or distance education. It’s a unique moment in our history.

In today’s podcast I want to share a special quote that I came across from Carryl Houselander that I feel speaks to the very heart of what it means to show up each day and be the presence of Jesus. There are going to be times in the days ahead where all of us begin to question if what we are doing is really making a difference. This podcast message will help us all to relaise that God wastes nothing. Regardless of how we may feel about the challenges of distance education or remote learning the fact is that we have a unique and priviledged place in their lives right at the moment.

Today’s Podcast

Even though you may not be physically going into the school you are still an incredibly important person in the lives of your students. A single email, a video call, a joke can make a big difference. So many of our students right now are facing so much uncertainty and anxiety. You are one of the most important regualr faces in their life.

My son recently started the 5th grade at our local Marist Brothers school and things had been going so well. With the arrival of the corona virus so much changed so fast. He was suddenly disconnected from his new friends and his new teachers. However, each morning at 9.30am they have been sharing a group call as a class. It’s a wonderful chance to be together and stay connected. So while distance learning may not be our preference it’s still a chance to connect and meet.

Jonathan Doyle is our go-to-guy for the latest evidence-based content and pedagogy on Christian education in sexuality and relationships.
